What is the most beautiful desert in Morocco

What is the most beautiful desert in Morocco

Looking to find the perfect desert to visit in Morocco in 2023? You have three great options to choose from, each with its own unique charm: Merzouga, Zagora, and Chigaga.

Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi is the most popular choice, with its higher and more colorful dunes, considered the largest and most beautiful sandy desert in all of Morocco. It is also the most accessible option, with a travel time of 8-9 hours from Marrakech via route N9 and N10, or 565km via route N9 and N12. On the other hand, Zagora desert is the nearest to Marrakech, located 360km away via route N9, and takes around 6.5 hours. While it doesn’t have the high and big sand dunes you might expect to see, it still has its own special charm. Erg Chigaga, located around 500km away from Marrakech, remains significantly less visited than Erg Chebbi, but boasts wide dunes, albeit not as high as those in Merzouga. Keep in mind that if you travel by small car, your last stop will be in Zagora town, and you will need to hire an off-road vehicle 4×4 to reach Erg Chigaga dunes.

When choosing which desert to visit, it’s worth considering the benefits of visiting a desert, which include disconnecting from the world and connecting with yourself, experiencing camel trekking through the vast Sahara desert, spending the night under the stars, and meeting friendly Nomads people. You can also learn about the Berber nomadic lifestyle in the Sahara, discover different cultures and history, contemplate unmatched landscapes, and enjoy impressive sunsets and sunrises over the dunes. There are also plenty of opportunities to do different activities, making your visit to the Sahara desert a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

To get the most out of your desert trip, it is recommended that you take at least a 3 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga (Erg Chebbi dunes). This will limit the amount of drive time in one day to around 4-5 hours and give you the opportunity to actually see some of the country instead of rushing through and missing out on sights en-route. Alternatively, you can take a 2 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and back, but keep in mind that the last day will be a full-day drive from Merzouga to Marrakech. If you have limited time, there are also day trip from Marrakech, which will give you the chance to visit some interesting sites along the way.

No matter which desert you choose to visit, you are sure to have an unforgettable experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your Marrakech desert tour  today!
